Soccer jersey mass confusion! Many fans are mixed up between the differences of an authentic and replica shirt. Many incorrectly believe all replicas are fakes. So we’re going to put an end to the guesswork. Okay, there are three basic types:
- Authentic
- Authentic Replicas
- Fakes/Knock-offs.
Authentic: These are Club issued products worn by professional players during their games. They are actually custom made to each player’s body with their primary aim being optimal player comfort. Naturally, they have a few exclusive features like not having collars (don’t need them) as well as differences in the material construction. Their patches/logos are also heat pressed, not embroidered for maximum comfort and minimal friction on the player’s body. Since they are solely engineered for maximum comfort and are usually worn only once, they are not as durable as authentic replicas. They are also much harder to find, are more expensive and they have a tight fit since they are made for elite athletes.
Verdict: For collectors and hobbyists
Authentic Replica: These are exact copies of Club issued authentic products with some minor modifications. Since most of us don’t possess the physique of an elite soccer player, authentic replicas are made in every size so every fan can enjoy them. They are also more durable than Club issued authentics and designed for everyday wear. They are as close as you are going to find to the Club-issued items. Both Club and manufacturer must inspect and approve them to earn the title of “official” or “authentic” replica. This is what legitimate online retailers sell.
Verdict: For fans.
Fakes/Knock-offs: These, you just stay away from. Sometimes, their sellers will try and trick you by stating they are “replicas” (they leave the word authentic out). Yes, they are horrific “replicas” at that. Don’t even bother buying these. In our opinion, they are a waste of money and any knowledgeable enthusiast will tell you most look like crap.
Verdict: For washing cars/mowing the lawn.
